Job Brief

We are looking for a talented Content Writer or Journalist to support our Communications department with high-quality stories and texts about our work in Tanzania. You will create and develop media material together with our Communications manager in Swahili and English.

Tasks

  • Write high quality articles in cooperation with our team of experts
  • Accompany our facilitators on their trips to our farmers and partners in the field to cover their work
  • Develop and write success stories about our farmers
  • Advertise SAT Farmer Training Courses, FairCarbon4Us, and other relevant consulting services
  • Creation and further development of internal communication materials
  • Management of in-country communications in local languages and local media outlets
  • Manage and produce articles and texts for our international network of partners
  • Proofreading and translation of reading materials

Requirements:

  • Fluent in English and Swahili
  • At least 3 years of experience as a journalist or similar
  • Very good writing skills
  • A degree-level qualification, preferably in Journalism / Marketing / Communications or similar
  • High Interest in organic agriculture
  • Team player who likes to learn new things
  • IT skills (Excel, Word, Teams)
  • Highly motivated
  • Drivers-license to ride a motorcycle
  • Experience in the NGO sector is a plus
  • Work in remote areas

    Farmer Training Centre Farm Manager

    We are looking for an experienced Farm Manager to work at SAT-Farmer Training center Farm. As a farm manager, you’ll be responsible for the work of farm staff, farm administrative issues, and all financial aspects of the farm. As the farm manager, you will also deal directly with suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders. Keeping up with new developments and ensuring compliance with regulations also falls under your areas of responsibility. Many farms have diversified in recent years and include keeping livestock of varying species and all these projects will also be overseen by you in your role. Note that many farms are concerned with arable crops as well as livestock so please check the reference for Farm Manager (Crops) as well. Your duties will vary with the type of livestock being reared.

    Responsibilities

    • Planning and implementing breeding programs of farm animals
    • Implementing new agroecological farming technologies which minimizes costs and enhances production and productivity
    • Ensuring the farm is compliant with various legal guidelines and working to minimize the environmental impact of the business, for instance via waste disposal
    • Monitoring the health and welfare of the livestock
    • Keeping all farm records including the movements of all livestock into and out from the farm
    • With the support of the Horticulture expert /supervisor ensure the horticulture section is properly managed and production is enhanced
    • Marketing and selling the livestock and livestock products to a variety of customers
    • Managing any farm diversification activities
    • Scheduling repairs, maintenance, and replacement of equipment and machinery.
    • Undertaking practical work as necessary depending on the volume of work
    • Recruiting and managing farm staff following discussion with the management and ensuring they work safely and effectively
    • Managing cash flow and developing and monitoring budgets

    As a Farm Manager, you’ll be likely to spend a lot of your time in the office and farm making sure that everything is moving along profitably and dealing with suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders. This doesn’t mean that you won’t be expected to undertake manual work around the farm at times which may involve physical labor in dirty conditions.

    You’ll need to be able to manage a team and solve problems as they arise without delay. Generally, the role is for someone who is interested in farming as a business enterprise, as well as in science and nature generally.

    WHAT QUALIFICATIONS ARE DEMANDED?

    Applicants will be required to have a relevant minimum Diploma in Livestock, animal production, range management, or Animal Science or Degree in Agricultural Sciences.

    Working experience Minimum 3 years.

    Alternatively, the candidate may have originally commenced employment in a farm business as a farm worker with an Apprenticeship level qualification in a subject such as Agriculture, specializing in livestock or animal husbandry

    The ability to make decisions in stressful environments, super communication and interpersonal skills, and willingness to work overtime as required will be a plus.

    Horticulture Farm Supervisor

    We are searching for a horticulture farm supervisor with good business sense to join our team. The supervisor’s responsibilities include monitoring staff, crops, and purchasing supplies, preparing budgets and reports, and ensuring maximum profit. You should be able to maintain professional networks and keep abreast of developments in horticultural science.

    As a supervisor, it is anticipated that you will be an outstanding supervisor, and the candidate should be a problem solver who is focused on efficiency and take a hands-on approach to the management of the horticulture unit.  

    Responsibilities:

    • Analysing existing operations, crops, staff, and financial documents and recommending improvements.
    • Preparing plans and schedules for planting and harvesting and ensuring staff understands expectations.
    • Visiting the different plots to inspect crops and also perform tests on soil and water.
    • Ensuring seeds, bio-fertilizers, bio-pesticides, and other supplies are regularly restocked.
    • Scheduling repairs, maintenance, and replacement of equipment and machinery.
    • Handling the marketing and sale of products produced on the farm like fruit, vegetables, spices and grain.
    • Ensuring all staff adheres to health and safety regulations.
    • Assisting with the recruitment and training of new staff members.
    • Collaborating with senior staff to prepare budgets and financial reports.
    • Building professional networks and keeping abreast of developments in horticulture science.

    What Qualifications Are Demanded?

    Applicants will be required to have at least a Diploma level qualification which might include Agriculture but specializing in horticulture will be an added advantage

    Extensive experience minimum 3 years working in a farming-related field and management experience would be a plus.

    A passion for agriculture, excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.

    The ability to make decisions in stressful environments, superb communication, and interpersonal skills, and willingness to work overtime as required
